Does china accept french as the international languge of diplomacy or do they use english and chinese languages for thier official foriegn affairs discussions ?

Title says it all, I am just wondering cause I am gonna try and learn it.

I know Cantonese(粵語) is the most widely spoken language in Hong Kong.
Many Hong Kong people speak Cantonese as their first language.

Then what is Hong Kong people's second language?
Is it English or Mandarin(Putonghua普通話)?
Which language do Hong Kong people generally speak better?

What's your opinion?

PS:Though I am chinese student,I am not exaggerating the fact.
Just talk about what you feel about Chinese language.

Do uni's usually have chinese degrees or courses or something, or is it only at TAFE?

I am interested in doing business in china realated products. I feel very difficult in communicating with the chinese. Hence, I want to read, write and speak the chinese language

English is 26 letters.

I want to translate English words into Chinese , but in English letters.

Like "how are you" in English is pronounce something like "nay ho ma" in Chinese.

How do I get that type of translation ?

Some charter schools in NY and Florida are teaching hebrew and some religious non-christian topics !( yes, they are teaching Judaism and hebrew )
Is this against the law?

I just need this because my 3 yr old niece has a difficulty during urination. What can you suggest too on how to cure it. Thanks

I have heard from my teachers that Japanese, Korean, British-English, and French are 'Fancy Languages', because they don't sound harsh when spoken, and are well mannered.

I am born in china so I already know how to speak chinese fluently. I just need to learn how to write. I'm currently going to take Chinese 101 in college and I was thinking about taking Japanese aswell my second semester.

I heard that the hardest part of learning Chinese is pronunciation (easy part for me) and the hardest part of learning Japanese is grammar.

I'm pretty devoted to learning both languages. Do you think its possible to learn both languages at once under my circumstances?

After watching the breathtaking opening of the Bejing Olympics, One could not help but notice that China showed the world that they have arrived on the world stage, with a party not even Hollywood A-list stars could rival. This brings me to my question China showed the world just what the are capable of, they have business affairs in more than 40 countries in Africa, have been opening up business deals in South America, and in many schools China is being implemented as a must learn language. Do you think the Chinese language will become an important language in the world future.

In English, if I say 'duck' as a ball is coming towards you, I obviously don't mean 'duck' as in the bird. In that vein, if I use the wrong tone when saying something in Chinese, will the listener be able to use situational or conversational context to ascertain my intended tone?

I am half Chinese and my friends and family have been encouraging me to study Mandarin. Has anyone also tried to study Mandarin? Has it been helpful and was it easy for you? Can you give me good websites where I can start off or perhaps CD which I could use personally ie i can buy from amazon etc?

The reason that Mandarin became a national language has to do with the political power vested in the Northerners and that the capital is at Beijing. If Sun Yat Sen, after he overthrew the Qing government were to start the national capital in Guangdong province, would that make Cantonese the national language?

I heard Chinese is very difficult and will never be an important language to learn.

You know how Japanese kanji have a pronunciation for whether they're used alone or used to form a word? Are Chinese hanzi the same way?

I live in Houston, Texas. I been looking through the net and I seem can't find Chinese sign language book. I would love to learn some, I have a friend who is Chinese they are deaf. Can you please help me find some, I searched for hours on net, still couldn't find it.
