Can anyone suggest a good beginner’s guide to learning the Mandarin Chinese language?
I regularly attend retreats and group meditation at a Chan Buddhism retreat center and some of the discussions and literature is written/spoken in mandarin chinese. I would like to learn the language in order to better understand the true meanings of the works we discuss. I have no prior experience other than listening to others speak the language.

Well, I started learning just a short time ago.
I don’t know if you’re a girl or a boy, but either way, I suggest finding some good dramas to watch that are in Mandarin. I personally have been watching Miss No Good ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-oT3ZhrYBw ), but any drama will do to help with listening comprehension. You can also try listening to some music/mandopop: Rainie Yang, Genie Zhou/Chuo, Guo Mei Mei, or Faye Wong.
For writing (which is also important to learn, along with speaking), I suggest the website: Learn Chinese EZ ( http://www.learnchineseez.com/ ). It has both writing scripts, Traditonal and Simplified (has shorter strokes than Traditional) characters. Traditonal is used in Hong Kong (and other Cantonese speaking areas) and Taiwan (they speak Mandarin). Simplified is used in Mainland China (like Beijing) and Singapore. I have been learning Simplifed, but depending on which one you come across the most, you may want to learn Traditional. To help with reading, you can try and buy some books in Chinese on Amazon ( http://amazon.com or the Chinese ver. http://www.amazon.cn ) or you can try YesAsia ( http://yesasia.com ) where they have books in Chinese, Manga translated from Japanese to Chinese, Manwa from Korean to Chinese, and Manhua which are Chinese comics.
Here are some extra things that I have been using to learn:
Ask Benny on YouTube – http://www.youtube.com/user/askbenny
LearnEasyMandarin on YouTube – http://www.youtube.com/user/LearnEasyMandarin
YangYang on YouTube – http://www.youtube.com/user/sloppycheng
The book "Practice Makes Perfect: Beginning Chinese" from Amazon – http://www.amazon.com/Practice-Makes-Perfect-Beginning-Interactive/dp/007160412X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1244981133&sr=8-1

Go to the library and use some language learning materials from there.

~Hope I helped! Have fun learning Mandarin.
It’s really not as hard as people make it out to be, so never give up on learning it! :]
go to Watch TV sitcoms and go to the educational tab. They have Mandarin Chinese lessons on there. I have a bunch of friends from Mainland China and got tired of being left out of parts of the conversation. I’m still in section 1, part 12 and I’m already keeping up in the conversations. I can pick out words and phrases and when we talk, and participate on a few topics. Its great, and you can download the lessons using a bit-torrent site. You just gotta look for it. Good luck.
Yes, I would like to give you my suggestion. Firstly, watch TV series in mandarin Chinese. Secondly, listen to music in mandarin Chinese, too. Thirdly, look for opportunities to communicate with Chinese native speakers to practice your Chinese. Furthermore, the best way to learn Chinese is to learn Chinese online, eChineseLearning could provide one-on-one online live Chinese lessons with professional Chinese teachers and your Chinese learning is based on your level, pattern and pace, if that case, you will get unexpected gain and make great progress in learning Chinese. There are many different books, but the best online dictionary is nciku, especially because of the character writer. Also books are good, but speaking it is really the only way to learn. Sharedtalk is a free online community of diverse language learners including Chinese/Taiwanes people. You can either speak or text chat with helpful people that are as eager to learn English as you are Chinese.
