I regularly attend retreats and group meditation at a Chan Buddhism retreat center and some of the discussions and literature is written/spoken in mandarin chinese. I would like to learn the language in order to better understand the true meanings of the works we discuss. I have no prior experience other than listening to others speak the language.

I have a Nokia E61 and when I go to change the language, I can only change it to Spanish, Portuguese, and French. Not to mention the obvious, English. That's all that's in the phone. Isn't it true that the purpose of writing was to be able reproduce spoken words? In Chinese languages even if the writing is not capable of reproducing common sounds, it is capable of communicating the same meaning. If the oral language preceded the written language, as we all think, then how can it be explained that a written language was agreed by people who speak differently?

Since Chinese (or Korean or Japanese, etc.) is not an alphabetic language and has so many ideographic characters, how is the keyboard structured to include all those characters?

I'm very curious if the Japanese language grew out of the Chinese language. Watching the Japanese news on TV, I see that many of the Japanese characters are exactly the same as some of the Chinese characters, and they mean the same thing (of course they have different pronunciations).

I want to translate English words into Chinese , but in English letters.

I installed the language pack but the words come up as actual Chinese letters.

Like "how are you" in English is pronounce something like "nay ho ma" in Chinese.

How do I get that type of translation ?
