(A translator for pinyin to english is preferred.) I would like a translator that translates whole phrases, not just a dictionary that translates individual words or characters. Thank you!

I'm looking for something that I can type pinyin in and it will translate into the Chinese Traditional characters, is there one out there online?

Jaclyn

I'm trying to learn how to pronounce aardvark, it says tu3 tun2.
Do I say tu three times and tun twice?
And how would I pronounce those?
This is very confusing.
Any does anyone have a good site that shows you how to write chinese characters?

Although i never asked them, I have a few friends of non Asian decent and are over the age of 25, have managed to more or less master Chinese pronunciation. Meaning the speak Chinese with no accent.

One guy speak Chinese with a north eastern accent, the other two with a Taiwanese accent.

I studied chinese for about 4 years now, one in the states and 3 in china. I guess my pronunciation isn't bad, and Chinese people understand everything I say with no problem. Still it would be cool to be one of those guys who can speak Chinese, or any language for that matter with no accent.

Heres what i do now

1. watch lots of Chinese TV and movies, and when ever i can remember, I mimic what the cast is saying...

2. from time to time, sing Chinese songs

3. and the one i rarely do, but perhaps should do the most is practice those standardization books, (Putong hua Deng Ji kao shi) Pretty much they are books with a CD, that are filled with things that are hard to say, compare sounds, and of co
sorry bottom got cut off...

compare sounds, and of course have tongue twisters.

I think my major problem is I just don't practice this stuff frequently enough and no longer have a Chinese person or teacher to tell me when I say something wrong, but still it would be great to hear what you guys have to say!!!

thanks!!!!

Is girl: yi ge nu hai er [no accents included]
boy: yi ge nan hai er

But I don't understand why are there so many words! Is this common? Can you translate each word into a english word? Thanks

PS: I know nothing about chinese and just started learning using Rosetta Stone which is incredibly vague with the pictures
awesome! thanks for the help. I understand now.

Is the Chinese surname 孫 pronounced the same in Mandarin and Cantonese? If there are any differences, what are they?

* Note 孫 can also be written as 孙.

I'm learning how to type in Chinese using Microsoft Pinyin IME but I want to know how to type the numbers 1 - 100.

For example,

If I want to know - red - it would give me something like:

hun-suh

or something like that

I want to use my baby's English name and surname but for her chinese name, I want to write that in chinese characters instead of pinyin. Is that allowed for Malaysian birth certificates? I know it's allowed in Singapore and Hong Kong.

大家好!!!
Hello everyone! I'm starting my first year of Mandarin Chinese at College.
I love the language, I'm intrigued by the culture and History....I'm in simply in love with it.
My question is, would practicing Chinese conversation 2 or 3 hours a a day everyday improve my pronunciation for the next 3 months?
For the ones who have studied Chinese, how long would it take to acquire and "OK" accent? My mother tongue is Spanish so it helps me to imitate sounds easier.
Any suggestions welcome! And any tutors too!

I read that there is a special word for the vegetarian religion or the vegetarian vow in Chinese Buddhism. But the book did not say what the word was. I am trying to find a Buddhist sect that has a special vegetarian vow and I think if I had the word in Pinyin it would make searching easier. Also I wondered if there is a Chinese word for the branch of Buddhism called "humanistic Buddhism". Thanks!

Ok, so I go to this Chinese school on Saturdays and I am trying to learn to speak Chinese, have been doing so for the past 4 years... and my teacher says I need to work on the tones and my accent, I was wondering if there was anyone out there who would be willing to talk Chinese with me and help me with pronunciation....perhaps through Skype? Please it would be much appreciated, xie xie....

Thank you for the suggestion, however, I have tried Bablefish and others. They allow me to only translate from Chinese simple or traditional to English.
For example,
If i try to translate a simple word as "xie xie", it does not recognize these word.
Thank you, however, I really
I'm looking for a translator that I can use online to translate Pinyin to English and English to Pinyin. I already use Babel Fish Translation for Chinese to English and English to Chinese. Need a Pinyin to English is the primary need

I wanna learn mandarin chinese pronunciation!?
i want a website giving detailed explanation and audio-visual aids like the following one.

http://www.uiowa.edu/~acadtech/phonetics/

I have seen this in writing on Chinese blogs. However, without the accent marks, I can't determine what this phrase means. Thank you.

I know the "technical" tones are Wo(3) xiang(3) qing(3) ni(3) chi(1) wan(3) fan(4). BUT, I thought the rule was that if there are 2 third tones, the first word becomes second tone. So how come when I listen to pronunciation it sounds like Wo(3) xiang(3) qing(2) ni(3) . . . ?

because theres some really good chinese songs that are either already translated into pinyin or chinese but i really want to know what it means and i dont understand pinyin or chinese!

I would like someone to translate the following words into Chinese Pinyin.

Rabid
Wolf
General
Howling
Twilight
Fang

Most specifically "Howling" and "Fang" which I cannot find a translation for myself; much appreciated.

I've tried to convince some Chinese students that reading aloud every morning to improve their pronunciation/oral English is actually a mistake. The reason is, I believe it will only form bad habits. Surely they are repeating the same pronunciation errors again and again until forms a habit. Am I right? If their pronunciation was perfect to start with, the method might have a little merit. I'm trying to get them to copy the voices of native speakers using mp3's instead. I think it will be much more beneficial because it will help their pronunciation and fluency which is what they want. My gut and experience tell me I am right but I'd still like to hear the opinion of some experienced English teachers. Am I right to try to get the students to stop reading aloud every morning? Is the mp3 alternative better? Thanks.

Oh, I nearly forgot. Just one more question. Reading quietly is better than reading aloud for improving reading skills, isn't it?

i used to be able to do this on Word languages on my Mac but it broke down...i don't have this function (where you type in like "ni hao" and it comes out with the character choices for you to pick) on my PC. i need to type things out for Chinese class and right now i'm unable to. if you know anything about this, please please help!

I'm a beginning student of Mandarin Chinese and am running into a disagreement with a friend over proper pronunciation. I always thought the word hen3 很 rhymes with the English word "fun," with the e pronounced like a deep "uh" in the throat. However my buddy thinks it sounds like the English word "hen." What is the correct way? I'm mainly interested in how it would be properly said in Beijing. Thanks in advance.

I recently got a computer with Vista installed on it. I want to type traditional Chinese characters (Taiwan) using pinyin as the input method, however, pinyin is not one of the options listed. I can type simplified Chinese using pinyin (Microsoft IME pinyin). When I had XP, this option was also provided for traditional characters, but I don't see it for Vista.

Do I need a download of somekind so I can type traditional characters using pinyin? Is there something that I should do that I am not doing?

I know how to read a handful of Chinese words, but don't know how to speak in Chinese at all. Then today I tried to look a little bit into pronuciation and I got stuck pretty quickly because I couldn't hear the difference between 机上面 and 机下面. It seems kind of important too, being that they are oppisites of each other.

Can someone help me with these sentences? I have to translate them into Chinese Pinyin.

5.I have many friends. She is the prettiest.
6.Have you seen Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon?
7.His Kung Fu is the best.
8.I have never played Ping Pong.
