China do they write in pinyin or mandarin chinese characters?

   Chinese characters. Children learn pinyin in first grade (kindergarten is not widely attended) so every student in China today does learn Pinyin, just as you are.

   If you’re wondering why you need Pinyin, it is what most Chinese people use to type on a computer (since there can’t possibly be a separate key for each character) and it is the best way to look up a character in the dictionary so that you can learn/remember how to write said character.

   Definitely in characters.
   But pinyin is an easy way to guide you how to read a character, just like the function of English phonetic symbol(which you don’t use in every day life) and it’s used in most dictionaries to give out pronunciation.

   Strictly speaking, pinyin is not a must for learning Chinese, but it is obviously the easiest way to type Chinese characters on computer and it’s compulsory for native Chinese kids to learn it at school. So you’d better learn it.
