I believe it will continue gaining influences around the world. It is a very beautiful language, with rich history and culture. Yet, it is hard to learn, I think more and more people will learn to speak Chinese, but not writing in Chinese. Not to mention the difficulty, it is not that necessary actually. Though Mandarin is the most spoken language in the world, this is mainly because there are 1.3 billion people in China alone (not to mention those overseas) and you can't really beat that.

For a language that has the potential to be a lingua franca, it has got to be easy to learn. Chinese is probably one of the hardest to learn, it has far more words than English. Unlike many European languages, it is not comprised of alphabets. Also, a single Chinese word could have many different meanings, it could be confusing to people who do not know Chinese. I suppose only people who try really really hard can learn Chinese well, it is simply not as easy to handle as English, German or French.

Nowadays many people around the world is showing interest in mandarin, but the Chinese government recognizes that it is really difficult for western people. English will reign for the centuries ahead.

It already is a powerful, important language. Over a quarter of the world's population speaks Chinese. I've been studying it off and on for about five years, three of those in college, and it isn't nearly as hard as people seem to think it is. The writing system makes perfect sense once you learn how it's organized, so that shouldn't scare anyone off either. You don't have all the verb conjugation you have in most other languages either, which makes it even easier.

mandarin chinese is becoming an important language of international trade, as chinas influence grows. this is not unusual historicaly speaking. greek was a dominant language of trade across the mediterannean in biblical times. latin, spanish, french, portuguese, japanese, hindustani, and arabic, have had their influences in the world as trade and influences spread.

I think so. I know MANY people of various races that are learning or have learnt it.

The sheer size of China is just frightening. Vodafone (UK) was supposed to be the largest telecommunications company in the World by number of customers (260 million Worldwide) then China rose and made China Mobile which is now by far the largest in the World with over 500 million subscribers. Companies that have strong business in a lot of countries Worldwide can't even compete with companies used by the Chinese population.

Another example is how English is supposed to be the most widely spoken language in the World with 341 million speakers (according to Encarta) but it's behind Mandarin/Chinese which has minimum 873 million speakers to a maximum Worldwide of over 1.21 billion speakers now.

Overall, I'd say yes it will be an even more (it already is) powerful language in the future.

Hope this helps.
