I was born in Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong, and came to US when I was 8. I learn most of the writing and the speaking technique from TVB's Hong Kong news and its drama. Of course, maybe Hong Kong drama is not so interesting to American but it is still very attractive since their dramas have different topics. It's a little bit harder to learn cantonese because it is not taught formally as much as mandarin. I bought a Comet English-Spanish-Chinese dictionary and it's beeb great. It speaks the words in all those languages, and for chinese it speaks mandarin and cantonese. All the above answers are great.
