Once you use a translator you will want to write in chinese so they will understand you and take their characters and translate them to english. Babel fish can also translate chinese web pages but you must use it online for all translations. You can buy Systran which can be used without being online but it is about 150 usa. It is ok but none are perfect. Expect to rewrite sentences a different way somwtimes so they will understand you but it is acceptable. My wife is chinese and when we met she knew no english at all. I also bought a small calculator sized translator for about 70 usa in China for using in places with no electricty such as cars and taxis. We prefer using Systran on the laptop since it is faster to type. Ni hao ma is pinyin. Pinyin is a way to pronounce chinese words. I doubt you will find a pinyin translator. Your chinese friend will use pinyin to teach you how to pronounce chinese words. If you want to say chinese words try rosetta stone.
