Is Mandarin a difficult language to learn?
I intend on learning Mandarin in evening classes at the University of Aberdeen as it likely to benefit my career once I've finished University. For those of you who have learned it, please tell me if it is difficult or not.
Thank you for your help

in fact it’s very easy but there are many artificial obstacles aimed at making the language more difficult than it is…
when you start learning it, it’s really scary, but the more you learn the clearer picture you have…
until you finally realize that "hard Chinese" gives more profit to some people than "easy Chinese"…
it’s like digging a pit with a spoon instead of a shovel…
The only difficult part is the writing system, but once you get past the about 2,000 characters that are needed for basic literacy, the rest is quite easy. Chinese grammar is quite simple.
It is not that difficult.. you just need determination and constant practice. The hard part could be the PinYin – the writing part. But it was FUN! My tutors, they mixed the teaching with simple songs (children songs), games etc. So we adults/pre-adults were not bored. Good Luck and practice always!
If you can easily handle remembering 4 thousand marks with their different meanings, you won’t be in trouble. Otherwise I think you’ll be definitely devasted, it is one of the hardest languages in the world, i’d go on something easier.
