Learn Mandarin and or Cantonese as Secondary Language?
I am a private employee who needs to learn Mandarin and or Cantonese as secondary language. How long do you think would it take me before I learn how to speak and understand these languages? specific time frame please.

if you need to speak a couple of common phrases (greetings etc) that will take you a month or two
listening and speaking withing the range of some popular listening courses is about 6 months = count that for 600 sentences you will be able to produce
anything serious starts from learning writing — and it’s very personal about your visual memory and diligence, several years minimum
I have been living in China working and trying to pick up the language. I would say if you take an intense course and study hard then a few months. If you are working and trying to fit studying in your spare time then more like 1 year.
if you are smart enough all you need is an intensive course for 6 months
learning both languages can be confusing, they seem very much the same, but the differences are great.
The signs are written different, the sounds are different and the grammar is different.
