I suggest your child learn Mandarin Chinese, not Cantonese, Cantonese is only used in a small part of of China-Guang Dong Province and HongKong, it is a dialect in fact but Mandarin is the official language of whole China.

1, Cantonese is only one of many Chinese speaking dialects. Among Chinese people, only 5% speak Cantonese who live or were born in Guangdong province or Hong Kong. 3, Why Cantonese is more famous than the other dialects of Chinese? Before 1980s, most of Chinese immigrants were from Hong Kong who speak Cantonese. So in China town of most countries, elder Chinese speak Cantonese. But after 1980s, most of Chinese immigrants are from Mainland China who only speak mandarin.
