I suggest your child learn Mandarin Chinese, not Cantonese, Cantonese is only used in a small part of of China-Guang Dong Province and HongKong, it is a dialect in fact but Mandarin is the official language of whole China.

Yes, she has her choice. But before she decides, you should give enough background knowledge. Any choice without enough knowledge and research would be terrible.

1, Cantonese is only one of many Chinese speaking dialects. Among Chinese people, only 5% speak Cantonese who live or were born in Guangdong province or Hong Kong. (More details about dialects structure, read Dialects of Chinese Pronunciation http://www.hellomandarin.com/ilovechinese/easy/20060620-07.html )
That means, if you speak Cantonese, 95% Chinese people cannot understand you.

2, Mandarin (Putonghua) is official Chinese pronunciation in China. Anyone who is educated speaks and can understand mandarin and all of official TV / broadcasting only use mandarin. That means, if you speak mandarin, all of Chinese people can understand you including people who speak Cantonese.

3, Why Cantonese is more famous than the other dialects of Chinese? Before 1980s, most of Chinese immigrants were from Hong Kong who speak Cantonese. So in China town of most countries, elder Chinese speak Cantonese. But after 1980s, most of Chinese immigrants are from Mainland China who only speak mandarin.

Mandarin. Mandarin is the official language of three countries; Cantonese is spoken in part of one of them (and by restaurant owners around the world). She can always pick up Cantonese later if she needs it.
