I regularly attend retreats and group meditation at a Chan Buddhism retreat center and some of the discussions and literature is written/spoken in mandarin chinese. I would like to learn the language in order to better understand the true meanings of the works we discuss. I have no prior experience other than listening to others speak the language.

I heard before that Mandarin Chinese is the most "spoken" language in the world. Before I heard this, I thought that English held that title. Is Mandarin Chinese just the most common native/first language? Is English the most universally known language?
I don't know exactly what was measured in order to obtain this fact.

For the ones who have studied Chinese, how long would it take to acquire and "OK" accent? My mother tongue is Spanish so it helps me to imitate sounds easier.
Any suggestions welcome! And any tutors too!

I'm a beginning student of Mandarin Chinese and am running into a disagreement with a friend over proper pronunciation. I always thought the word hen3 很 rhymes with the English word "fun," with the e pronounced like a deep "uh" in the throat. However my buddy thinks it sounds like the English word "hen." What is the correct way? I'm mainly interested in how it would be properly said in Beijing. Thanks in advance.
