What is the pronunciation difference between these Chinese words?
I know how to read a handful of Chinese words, but don't know how to speak in Chinese at all. Then today I tried to look a little bit into pronuciation and I got stuck pretty quickly because I couldn't hear the difference between 机上面 and 机下面. It seems kind of important too, being that they are oppisites of each other.

im only a kid learning chinese but one is i think above the plane and one is below the plane… for your first characters it is above for your second one it is below… soo its basically the middle word that is different.. up and down.. up is shang… down is xia..
You will have to learn ping yin to be able to understand mandarin pronunciation.
上 is pronounced as shang (the 4th sound)
下 is pronounced as xia (also the 4th sound)
There are some similarities between English and ping yin, but they are not exactly the same.
These two sentences are simply distinguishing the two ideas of under and over/above. The two characters that make the difference are listed below. These two characters are very common in Chinese and can be understood as an adj. or a verb depending on the context.
上 (shang4)= up, on, over, above, go up, ascend, charge (military), etc.
下 (xia4)= down, under, underneath, beneath, get off (transportation), go down, descend, etc.
上面 (shang4 mian4) – on something, on the surface of something, on top of.
下面 (xia4 mian4) – underneath, below, on the bottom of.
Thus, when you add the word 机, which can mean; machine, computer, cell phone, or any kind of mechanical creation the words mean basically this.
- On top of the machine. On the top of the machine.
- Under the machine. Underneath the machine.
Hope this helps you.
