Well, I have absolutely no experience with Korean, but I can offer my thoughts on Japanese and Mandarin Chinese, since I am a second-year student in both.

Japanese has two alphabets particular to it's language, plus one special set of "Chinese characters." I think that this is a fairly simple language to understand because of the alphabet, and the fact that it has "sentence markers (particles)," but unfortunately the language is a bit of a tongue-twister.

As for Mandarin Chinese, this is a very fun language to learn, as well. I myself don't get very tongue-tied with it, but the characters are a little bit difficult sometimes, and I definitely think you need a patient and kind teacher.

Regarding what language most people study... I honestly couldn't tell you. I can, however, tell you that Mandarin Chinese is the most widely-spoken language in the world (and it's very good to know in Chinatown!), but Japanese is a very fun language, as well.

Just some insight into the two languages, I suppose. I'm sorry that I can't be of more help. Good luck to you, though!

Mandarin is supposed to be the next big language of need, especially if you already know English, and have another language. You could be very marketable in many businesses!

Japanese! It's so beautiful. The people are very nice and its a beautiful place to visit! It's not as hard as Mandarin because it has no tone marks or anything and its not that hard.. There's a lot of short cuts.. I also find it the easiest in pronouncing words as well and its one of the places with the best economies in the world. Business is very important there.
PLUS, their music is AWESOME... Listen to Gackt.. IF you like rock or pop. ;]

I would totally recomend Korean, Japanese and then Mandarin Chinese.
Why?

1- Korean has simplier letters (trust me) it took me atleast 2 weeks to know all the letters and i taught my friend who is 100% Cubian (best friend) how to write and speak the letters in Hangul (korean language) and she is very good too, better than me! :]

2- Japanese has some korean in it which makes it atleast 26% easier to learn Japanese.

3- Then you should take Mandarin Chinese which Japanese and korean took some of Chinese's letter for their own langauge. This makes a 65% easier for you when you learn Mandarin Chinese.

I hope you take my advice! ;D
