I would think that Chinese would probably be more beneficial. However, China is pwning world’s economy, right now, and we’re starting a lot of business with them. We’ll probably be involved with China for a long time. So, probably, Chinese would be of more use to you. However, ultimately, it depends on what your final goal is.

Both are top 10 languages. If you live or are going to US or Asia, learn Chinese. French in Canada, Europe, Africa.
French is much easier, but Chinese is more rewarding.

Chinese is definitely the way to go if you’re looking at business. France has a very relaxed, "whatever" policy towards business while Chinese is growing at a ridiculous speed. I started taking Chinese several years ago because I wanted to be able to converse with the companies that would be essential to future business relations. After spending 6 months in China over the last 2 years, there is no doubt in my mind that their economy will overtake ours, so Chinese is good if you want to know how to speak to your future bosses!
