I doubt it English is and will remain the International language. Chinese is becoming more popular and will become more necessary as China opens up more and more to International trade, but it is only one country, no matter how vast and populous and the financial and trading world involves all countries.
English is also much easier to learn and master.
No. It will always be English. It is the most spoken language followed by Spanish.
It is highly unlikely. English won its place as International language because of American economic strength but also because of the large power base it has through the British Empire. English is still an official language in around 60 countries and a second language in many more.
Chinese is an official language in only once country other than China – tiny, little Singapore.
There are already more English speakers in China than in the USA!
It could be….why don’t you learn it? Your background is all the more reason to learn it.
I consider learning ANYTHING as the mark of my being educated and open.
I am learning mandarin and more ideograms simply because they fascinate me and because I want to learn everything…I am also learning one of the "click" dialects/languages of another land.
Good luck to you!
**hmm…. this is a good question.. as the world continue to change, lots of things also happen for the first time and differently. You’re idea that Chinese language might be our international language might happen ..
The reason English is currently the international language is because of the vast, highly influential historical events which took place during the last 600 years. In addition to English being a set common language in most aspects of international activity, the world as of now, is nowhere near being in a position to change this. Perhaps over the course of a hundred years or so, if China somehow becomes the center of popular world culture, things may change. The 2008 Olympics certainly did steer a bunch of attention in popularizing Chinese for the past few years, and there absolutely has been a spike of people learning Mandarin, but still isn’t that much of a craze. As of now, we’re pretty much set in our ways, and more importantly, there’s not enough financial incentive to see any short term change of English as the international language.
