Chinese will not become a international language. English is made as a international language as a lot people understands the language, and it contains only 26 characters. While for Chinese, it contains thousands of characters, and each character contains several strokes. To balance this two language, English would be a wiser choice to be made as a international language.
It definitely will be as China’s pace of growth is second to none in history. Not only just because China is becoming strong and powerful, as a Chinese descendant, it’s really a shame not knowing your own culture and heritage. Chinese words in themselves are full of history and culture. Simply look at the strokes as written in the word "Chinese" it tells so much the background and the whereabouts of Chinese culture.
not until the US is going to cut their military spending.
While I agree there is a huge amount of support and persons who speak Mandarin, I don’t see it (easily) becoming an international language.
As was previously mentioned, the need to memorize thousands of pictographic characters is not something that non-native speakers will be keen on devoting time and effort to. Also many foreigners find it increasingly difficult to get the correct tonal pronunciation down.
In closing, a few words to "Sam" who seems to enjoy her "exalted" status as a speaker, writer, and reader of Chinese. I don’t even SPEAK Chinese. So this poster is light years ahead of me. Yet as a first generation American Chinese I am proud of the history of China and what the Chinese have done. You don’t have to speak Chinese to be proud of your heritage. You’ll find several million of overseas Chinese who don’t speak Mandarin either.
By the way- how’s your Spanish? Your Bahasa Malaysia? I can speak and write both fluently. Sometimes folks who haven’t grown up in a Chinese speaking environment (like Singapore) aren’t able to avail themselves of opportunities to learn Chinese. Please consider that before you post publicly next time.
Chinese/Mandarin/Putonghua is definitely becoming an international language. Just look at the number of foreigners who are learning Chinese in order to gain an entry into the China market.
You should let your children learn Chinese and perhaps, if you can spare the time, yourself too. Perhaps you may want to inquire at Chinese Chamber for their courses. It is not as expensive as you think.
You should not feel any shame in not being able to read or write in Chinese. Each of us goes through a different life paths and some choices e.g. education is not totally up to us.
In my opinion, Sam is being too narrow minded and arrogant in dismissing any ethnic chinese who is not fluent in Chinese. If Sam is a Singaporean (I am guessing), I would like to know how well does he/she understand his/her own national anthem
Of course not , but if you learn how to speak and write chinese , it might help if you want to develop in the China market , as it has a lot of potential .

No. Why are the majority of city-based Chinese in the PRC learning english if they believe their own language will be the new international language?
China’s rise is not "second to none" – indeed there are other countries which grew by faster, for longer – economic history 101 really. HOWEVER – being effectively bi-lingual will be an advantage, so if you want to learn it, go ahead! look at Europe where (apart from the UK) most people speak at LEAST two languages, and often 3 or 4, of which at least one is from another entirely different language tree (i.e Romantic, Slavic, Germanic etc).
Forget this nonsense about the new ‘international’ language – it changes every generation (in mine Japanese was the ‘must-learn’ language as they were going to dominate the world!
) – why not be unique? (or at least more unique). If you learn Mandarin, great, but you’ll be one of many in Singapore. Why not go for Spanish? Russian? both languages widely spoken outside their countries or origin in places that are booming now and will boom for many years to come. Arabic or Hindi would be two other good choices as well.
If you have been to china, you know it is going to be the greatest country soon,
some of their mega cities that you may not have heard off is 35m in population, that’s more than Aust and NZ combine, and that is just one city.

$$ it pays.
Even with the rapid development of China since its taking part in the WTO, it is still uncertain when exactly Chinese will become a global language; however, it is clear that Chinese will someday become a global language just as English is today. Nowadays, there are more and more people beginning to speak and learn Chinese, and they view Chinese as an important language when communicating with others. As a consequence, the day must be coming when Chinese will become a global language.
